Weekly Series: 17 weeks

get that camera outta my face, woman.

Age: 17 weeks

Weight: Probably 47-50 lbs (we'll find out at the vet this week or next!)

Likes: Trying to eat rocks, Blue Buffalo Turkey bites, your new squeaky ball (or anything with a squeaky)

Dislikes:  the vacuum and broom - basically any floor cleaning tool.  other dogs barking at you.  having your picture taken (you hate the click).

Claim to fame: Taller than the average couch cushion.  Kicks every ball under the couch like he's a soccer player.

You are 75% less itchy as of the last 2 days!  It's a huge relief, we're not sure if it's the 3 meds you're on, the change in food, or if you really did have fleas before the flea bath/pill.  Either way we are happy.  Hopefully the itch stays away once we wean you off the meds.

You're still biting us a TON.  Our arms are looking pretty terrible.  You won't be distracted when you're in bite mode.  The trainer recommended giving you a 'time out' in your crate, BUT she said we have to get you in there without dragging you there.  So this results in a treat, which I'm not sure if that sends the 'stop biting us' message.  :)

You're getting super tall, but are still super clumsy & adorable.

  1. Gotta love training dogs..I frequently wonder if training humans someday will be easier! Ok, that sounded weird.
Love your blog, by the way!

  2. so my puppy used to be really bite-happy and what we did is taught him "kisses" and gentle.
we would put a little bit of butter or yogurt on our hands or arms (weird i know) and then when he licked it, we would praise him over and over while saying "kisses, kisses. gentle. good boy!"

took awhile but it worked! just reinforcing the positive not the negative. :)

  3. I'm soooo glad he's feeling less itchy! Sounds like you're getting the flea situation under control. Whooohoooo! :)

Ha ha with getting the balls under the couch. I have a pup that does that on purpose and then he can't figure out how to get them back out so he stares at it and whimpers until one of us goes and rescues his long lost ball...lol!

  6. Oh No! I would not recommend putting him in his crate as "time out," treat or no treat! I really don't think dogs understand time out and a crate shouldn't be used for punishment...it should be their safe place!! I would try distracting him with other commands. If he bites tell him to sit, then shake, and praise him. Or like we did with Huck, try swatting him on the nose and say leave it.

Training a pup is such hard work! He will get it though!! :)

  8. What a cute "little" guy! We've used "the pet corrector" to correct bad behavior with our dog. It's a red bottle filled with compressed air that makes a hiss sound when you press the top. The sound tells the dog the behavior is wrong. It's meant for barking, but it's been great for training our puppy to stay in the yard and not take food off the table.

  9. Oh my gosh, he is ADORABLE! I was told never to use the crate as punishment because you want it to be their little safe place. Always give a treat when he goes in there so he associates it with good things. As far as the biting, our vet had us pick up the puppy in our arms and hold him sideways which apparently means you're the dominant one. (it did actually work). But I don't know what to do when the puppy weighs so much! I'm a new follower :)
